KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Court has granted permission to keep Nepali Congress lawmaker Maya Rai in custody for three days for further investigation in connection with a major cooperative fraud case.

Rai was arrested in relation to the Swarnalaxmi Savings and Credit Cooperative, located in Kalimati.

She previously served as the Joint Secretary on the cooperative’s executive committee.

Initially, Rai was released from custody, which sparked widespread criticism from the public and political circles.

However, fresh investigations have led authorities to formally file charges against Rai and five other individuals.

They are accused of embezzling over Rs 1,193,090,000 from 690 depositors, raising serious concerns over financial misconduct and breach of public trust.

Authorities are continuing the probe as public pressure mounts for stricter action and accountability in cooperative fraud cases across the country.
