KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Shakti Bahadur Basnet has accused the government of sidelining pressing national and public concerns while focusing solely on power-sharing and political stability.

Speaking during Sunday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Basnet claimed that the government’s full attention is directed toward managing political alliances and ensuring its own survival, rather than addressing the genuine needs of the people.

He pointed out that schoolteachers have been protesting in the streets for the past 26 days, yet the government has failed to respond to their demands.

He urged the government to show urgency in resolving issues that can be addressed within the existing legal framework and to create a credible environment by ensuring that the education-related bill is soon tabled in Parliament.

“It has become clear that the government’s priorities do not include national or public interest issues. Instead, it is entirely focused on distributing power among political parties and maintaining its hold on governance,” Basnet said. “While the government keeps talking about dialogue, it is doing little to actually resolve the crisis.”

Basnet also criticized the repeated postponement of the 10th National Sports Tournament scheduled to be held in Karnali Province, saying it has created uncertainty and stagnation in the sports sector.
