KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Asim Shah has called for Meta—the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—to officially register in Nepal.

Speaking during Sunday’s session of the House of Representatives, Shah stated that Meta has become a key platform for communication, business, and expression for the Nepali people, making its registration in the country essential.

He emphasized that all foreign companies must comply with Nepali laws and said merely issuing warnings to Meta without resolving legal ambiguities is “embarrassing.” Shah questioned why Meta is hesitating to register in Nepal when it has done so in other countries.

“This isn’t just a negotiation with a company; it’s a message to the global community about Nepal’s digital future,” Shah said, urging the government to demonstrate diplomatic competence in its dealings with Meta.
