KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man who had been on the run for 20 years after allegedly murdering his father-in-law in Tulsipur, Dang.

According to DSP Anil Thakuri, chief of the Area Police Office Tulsipur, 42-year-old Bir Bahadur Gurung of Tulsipur Sub-Metropolitan City-12, Tarigaun, was apprehended on Friday.

Gurung had been absconding since the night of July 29, 2005 (Shrawan 14, 2062 BS), following the alleged killing of his father-in-law, 35-year-old Kashiram BK, who ran a vegetable shop at the New Bus Park in Tulsipur-5.

As per police reports, the incident occurred after a heated dispute between the two.

Under the influence of alcohol, Gurung reportedly assaulted BK with his hands and feet, causing fatal injuries after knocking him to the ground.

Following the murder, Gurung fled to India, where he lived for 15 years working as a driver. He later returned to Nepal about five years ago and continued working in the same profession, DSP Thakuri said.

With the 20-year anniversary of the incident approaching, police intensified their efforts and successfully arrested Gurung from Tarigaun.

He is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway.
