21 injured as teacher-chartered bus overturns in Jhapa

KATHMANDU: At least 21 people, including 13 schoolteachers, sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned early Saturday morning in Shivsatashi Municipality-9, near the Milanchowk area of Duhabi in Jhapa district.

According to the District Police Office, Jhapa, the night bus, en route from Kathmandu to Kakarbhitta, lost control and overturned along the East-West Highway at approximately 5:30 AM.

All injured individuals are reported to be in stable condition.

They were returning home after participating in a protest program, according to preliminary reports.

The bus, bearing license plate Province 1-01-001 Kha 4235, was carrying several passengers, including the group of teachers.

Most of the injured sustained head and limb injuries.

Emergency responders transported nine of the injured to B&C Hospital and the remaining 12 to Birta City Hospital in Birtamode for medical treatment, as per the Area Police Office in Jhiljhile.

The 38-year-old driver, Mahendra Kandangwa, has been taken into custody for investigation.

Authorities are continuing their inquiry into the cause of the accident.
