Minister Pandey proposes heritage walking circuit in Kathmandu valley
He stressed that Nepal remains vulnerable to powerful earthquakes at any time and called for collaborative efforts from all three levels of government to prepare accordingly.

KATHMANDU: Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, has proposed the development of a dedicated heritage walking circuit connecting major cultural sites within the Kathmandu Valley.
Addressing the third annual meeting of the International Scientific Committee (Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Sites) on Friday, Minister Pandey emphasized the need to preserve and promote the Valley’s rich cultural heritage by creating pedestrian pathways linking iconic sites such as Swayambhu, Hanuman Dhoka, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Changunarayan, Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath.
“A dedicated circuit will allow tourists to explore the Valley’s heritage in a more focused and immersive manner, while also contributing to the conservation of these sacred sites,” Pandey said.
He stressed that Nepal remains vulnerable to powerful earthquakes at any time and called for collaborative efforts from all three levels of government to prepare accordingly.
“The structures we build must be resilient, considering the constant risk of large earthquakes. We need to raise awareness and develop infrastructure that respects archaeological values while ensuring safety,” he added.
Minister Pandey cited global examples where modern vehicles and equipment are restricted in sensitive heritage zones, allowing only pedestrian movement to preserve archaeological integrity.
“If possible, we should develop a walking circuit within Kathmandu where people can walk freely, without fear of traffic or noise. Such a circuit would not only enhance tourist experience but also promote heritage preservation,” he stated.
He further emphasized the importance of showcasing Nepal’s unique culture and natural beauty to the world and noted that post-earthquake reconstruction has revived national confidence, spiritual values, and cultural pride.
