KATHMANDU: An intense heatwave sweeping across Nepal, particularly in the Terai region, has significantly disrupted daily life. Unseasonably high temperatures are causing growing concern for public health and livelihoods.

According to Bharatpur Airport authorities, Chitwan recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C on Wednesday, with temperatures rising from 23°C at 6 AM to over 38°C by noon. Similar readings were recorded on Tuesday, while Monday saw a high of 38°C.

Meteorologists warn the mercury could soon surpass 40°C if the current trend continues.

Although recent rainfall had briefly provided some relief following a dry winter, the current scorching sun has quickly erased those gains.

Daily-wage workers, farmers, and the elderly are among the most affected, with many having to alter their work schedules to avoid peak heat hours.

Health Risks Increasing
Doctors report a rising number of heat-related illnesses such as:

Dehydration

Eye irritation

Headaches

Diarrhea

Skin rashes and itching

Children and the elderly are particularly at risk, prompting heightened health concerns in many districts.

Authorities Urge Public Caution

Local authorities and healthcare institutions have issued public advisories, encouraging people to stay alert and safe during the ongoing heatwave. Social organizations have also stepped in, distributing cold drinking water and launching public awareness campaigns.

Precautionary Measures Advised:

Drink plenty of clean water throughout the day.

Wear light, cotton clothing to help the body stay cool.

Avoid going outdoors during peak sunlight hours, especially between 11 AM and 3 PM.

Use hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses if travel is necessary.

Seek immediate medical help if symptoms like dizziness, severe sweating, or vomiting occur.

Keep children and elderly family members indoors and well-hydrated.
