KATHMANDU: The youth organization ‘For Identity’ has called for open dialogue to resolve the controversy surrounding the construction of a cable car in Pathibhara (Mukumlung), stating that all parties should be ready for a solution through discussions.

At a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, the organization expressed its willingness to engage in talks with the government to address the issue of the cable car project, emphasizing that they are not opposed to development.

Krishna Chongbang, the Chair of the organization, criticized the government for attempting to suppress the protesting groups without engaging in dialogue.

He stated that despite various efforts to initiate discussions, the government has remained indifferent. The press conference in Kathmandu was held to draw attention to the matter.

Chongbang suggested that if the government acknowledges the concerns of the protesting groups and begins dialogue, the issue could be resolved through mutual discussions.

Miktok Limbu, Chair of the Limbuwan Brotherhood, stressed that Pathibhara is a heritage closely tied to the identity of the Limbu people, and therefore, any construction of a cable car should guarantee the preservation of their identity.

Despite seven years of protests, he lamented that the government has not paid heed to their demands.

Limbu also pointed out that conflicts, revolutions, and political struggles worldwide have been resolved through dialogue, and the issue of the cable car could similarly be addressed through conversation.

He emphasized that discussions at the local level regarding the model of development are crucial.

Viraj Angdamba Limbu, central coordinator of the ‘For Identity’ organization, stated that their struggle is to protect the existence of their civilization and identity.

He mentioned that the organization is fighting for the preservation of culture, reflecting the sentiment of the people, in accordance with the rights granted by the Constitution of Nepal.

The organization has called for development projects that respect local identity and existence, and has warned that if the government continues its repressive approach and the cable car company does not publicly clarify its stance, they will escalate their movement into a third people’s movement.
