KATHMANDU: Doctors staged a protest in Kathmandu on Thursday, accusing the government of labor exploitation by not providing the minimum salary as mandated.

The demonstration took place at Maitighar Mandala, where protesting doctors voiced concerns that they are being denied the government-set minimum wage.

The group was heading towards the Ministry of Health and Population for a symbolic encirclement when police intervened and stopped them at Maitighar.

Following the protest, Minister for Health and Population, Pradeep Paudel, invited the agitating doctors for talks in an effort to address their concerns.

The Nepal Medical Association has warned that if their demands are not met, all health services—except for emergency and intensive care—will be halted nationwide starting Baisakh 12 (April 24).

Doctors are urging the government to enforce the salary structure set by the Nepal Medical Council for Level 8 positions and to take measures to protect academic progression within the medical profession.
