KATHMANDU: Nepal’s top leaders have strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India, which targeted innocent tourists. The attack left at least 27 dead, including one confirmed Nepali national.

President Ramchandra Paudel, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued separate statements expressing deep sorrow and outrage over the incident.

President Paudel, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated, “The news of innocent civilians losing their lives in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam is extremely heartbreaking. Such acts of violence are deplorable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.” He also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

Prime Minister Oli, also on X, expressed profound sympathy for all affected, saying, “My deepest condolences to the victims of this heinous attack. Nepal stands firmly with India and strongly opposes all forms of terrorism.” He also confirmed that one Nepali citizen, Sandip Nyaupane, was among those killed, and mentioned that another individual named Bitan Adhikari was yet to be identified by nationality. He assured that necessary support would be provided to the victims.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a separate statement condemning the “barbaric assault targeting innocent tourists” and expressed solidarity with India during this difficult time. “Such acts are deeply tragic and inexcusable,” the statement read. “Nepal stands united with India and reiterates its firm position that no terrorist act can ever be justified under any circumstances.”

The Baisaran area, often dubbed the ‘Mini Switzerland’ of Kashmir, is a popular tourist destination.

Reports from Indian media confirm that the assailants specifically targeted tourists after asking their names.

This brutal incident has drawn comparisons to the 2019 Pulwama attack in the same region, which claimed the lives of 40 Indian soldiers.
