KATHMANDU: A devastating wildfire that spread from the forest into a nearby settlement has destroyed a home and livestock shelter in Nisdi Rural Municipality-1, Bankamalaung, Palpa.

The fire, which started in the Bancharedanda forest area of Juredanda, engulfed the residence of local resident Dil Bahadur Saru, according to local source Shalikram Pandey.

Fanned by strong winds, the flames reached Saru’s thatched roof shelter, completely burning down both his house and animal shed.

The fire resulted in the loss of cows, buffaloes, 20 goats, stored grains, utensils, and clothing, as confirmed by the Keladi Police Post in Palpa.

Preliminary police investigations estimate the damage at around Rs 2.5 million (approximately USD 19,000).

Although two other houses stood nearby, they were saved from the fire.

Locals had rushed to contain the wildfire to prevent it from reaching the settlement, but strong winds caused the fire to leap into Saru’s shed, igniting the structure.

The wildfire initially broke out on Tuesday afternoon in the Bancharedanda forest, as reported by local residents.

In response to the tragedy, the Backwardness Eradication Society (BASE) Nepal has provided Rs 5,000 in immediate relief to the affected family.

Meanwhile, another wildfire has also been reported in the forest area of Tinau Rural Municipality-5, Koldanda.
