KATHMANDU: The National Examination Board (NEB) has decided to postpone the Grade 12 examinations by 10 days, shifting the start date from April 24 to May 4.
The decision follows a meeting held this evening, influenced by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s suggestion.
Board Chairperson Mahashram Sharma confirmed the rescheduling, stating that although an earlier meeting in the morning had resolved to proceed with the exams from April 24 by mobilizing civil servants, the plan faced pushback due to a lack of support from government employees and ongoing teacher protests.
In light of the controversy and practical challenges, board officials held a series of consultations throughout the day with the Ministry of Education and other government bodies.
Later in the evening, a delegation led by Chairperson Sharma met with Prime Minister Oli at Baluwatar.
Following the discussion, the Prime Minister advised postponing the exams by a few days, after which the board reconvened and officially rescheduled the exams to begin from May 4.
Earlier in the day, the board had planned to conduct the exams with the help of the District Examination Coordination Committees, led by Chief District Officers.
However, the nationwide academic strike initiated by the Teachers’ Association from April 2 had severely impacted exam preparations.
This year, around 500,000 students are expected to appear for the Grade 12 examinations.
A total of 1,591 exam centers have been designated, including one in Japan.
The board had also arranged to mobilize an equal number of chief and assistant exam coordinators, approximately 2,000 staff based on student numbers, at least one administrative assistant per center, and 20,000 security personnel across all locations.
