Corruption case filed against newly appointed Madhesh Media Council Chief

KATHMANDU: A corruption case has been filed against Kamal Kumar Upadhyaya, the newly appointed chair of the Media Council under the Madhesh Province government.
The case was filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Tuesday, targeting Upadhyaya along with two others.
Upadhyaya had just taken an oath of office as chairman, administered by Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh on Monday.
The CIAA has filed the case against Upadhyaya, former acting chief administrative officer of Bara Pacharauta Municipality, Shyam Prasad Yadav, and accountant Hasim Miyan Ansari for embezzling Rs 352,560.
The trio is accused of violating the Public Procurement Act by manipulating the tender advertisement process.
According to the law, public tender notices must be published in a national daily newspaper, but the notice was only published in a single issue of the newspaper ‘Prabhav’ by a company owned by Upadhyaya, KS Multipurpose Pvt. Ltd.
The CIAA’s statement revealed that after confirming the payment, the three individuals were charged under the Corruption Prevention Act, 2059, Section 8 (1)(ng), and the commission has demanded imprisonment as part of their legal actions.
Madhesh Province’s Home and Communication Minister Rajkumar Lekhi recently stated that he had just received information on the matter and was engaged in discussions about it.
