Nepal reaffirms support for indigenous rights at UN forum

KATHMANDU: Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration of Nepal, Rajkumar Gupta, has said that the Government of Nepal holds a positive approach towards indigenous nationalities.

Addressing the 24th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, Minister Gupta, who is leading the Nepali delegation, shared Nepal’s commitments and efforts in promoting the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples.

According to Ministry spokesperson Kali Prasad Parajuli, Minister Gupta also held bilateral meetings with Deputy Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers, and other ministers from various countries.

The discussions focused on mutual interests, areas of common concern, and the expansion of future cooperation.

The 24th session of the Forum includes discussions on key issues related to economic and social development, culture, environmental protection, education, health, and human rights.

Minister Gupta is also scheduled to address the Forum on the implementation practices and challenges of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within UN member states and systems.
