Saptakoshi River incident: Uncle dived in to save nephew

KATHMANDU: A man (maternal uncle) and his nephew have gone missing after being swept away by the Saptakoshi River while bathing during a family pilgrimage to Barahkshetra Temple.

The missing individuals have been identified as 40-year-old Nabaraj Bastola from Kepilashgadhi Rural Municipality, Khotang, and his 16-year-old nephew Jenish Acharya, a resident of Balgam, Itahari-16.

According to Sunsari District Police Chief SP Suman Kumar Timalsina, the incident occurred when the nephew was pulled by the river current, and his uncle went in to save him but was also swept away.

The family had traveled from Itahari to Barahkshetra Temple for religious rituals early Monday morning.

Despite immediate search efforts by the Nepal Police and a team of divers from the Armed Police Force (APF) No. 1 Baraha Battalion Headquarters, the duo remains missing.

Authorities say search operations are ongoing.
