KATHMANDU: Federico Valverde scored in injury time to secure a 1-0 victory for Real Madrid over Athletic Club, keeping their La Liga title hopes alive.
Valverde’s decisive goal came in the third minute of injury time, with a left-footed volley.
This marks his sixth league goal of the season, his first since scoring against Sevilla in December.
Real Madrid played without French striker Kylian Mbappé, who was serving a one-match suspension after receiving a red card in their previous 1-0 win over Alaves.
With the win, Real Madrid narrowed the gap to Barcelona at the top of the table to just four points, with six games remaining in the season.
On Saturday, Barcelona also secured a late win, coming from 3-1 down to win 4-3. Raphinha’s penalty in injury time helped Barcelona claim the victory.
Real Madrid, the reigning Champions League champions, were eliminated from the competition last week after a 5-1 aggregate defeat to Arsenal in the quarterfinals.
However, they remain hopeful of retaining their La Liga title.
In other La Liga action, Osasuna triumphed 3-2 over Valladolid, while Villarreal and Real Sociedad played to a 2-2 draw.
Sevilla and Alaves ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
