KATHMANDU: Preparations to release Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) General Secretary Dr. Dhawal Shumsher Rana have reached their final stage.

Kathmandu District Police has summoned his wife, Pratima Rana, to appear at the police office on Saturday morning.

Confirming the development, RPP leader Rishiraj Devkota said that Pratima Rana has been called by police and that the party leaders are also preparing to go to the police complex.

Rana was originally scheduled to be released on Friday, but delays in completing legal procedures led to a postponement, according to the police.

News of his potential release had drawn a large crowd of RPP leaders and supporters at the police office on Friday.

The Office of the Government Attorney, acting on the recommendation of the Kathmandu Police, has decided to release Rana on a conditional bail.

Rana, who is undergoing cancer treatment, is required to travel to India for regular follow-ups, prompting authorities to allow temporary release on medical grounds. His statement has already been recorded, and legal proceedings will now move forward, officials said.

Rana was arrested on March 28 following a violent protest organized by pro-monarchy activists in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area.

Just a day earlier, the United People’s Movement Committee—advocating for the restoration of the monarchy—had strongly objected, accusing authorities of denying him medical treatment.
