KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a 22-year-old man accused of stealing over Rs 10.2 million from eSewa users by sending phishing links via SMS.

The suspect, identified as Rahul Budha, originally from Krishnapur Municipality-1 in Kanchanpur and currently residing in Anamnagar, Kathmandu, was apprehended on Tuesday by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, Teku.

According to police, Budha sent fraudulent SMS messages to thousands of individuals, warning them that their eSewa accounts were about to be suspended. The messages included phishing links, which, once clicked, allowed unauthorized access to users’ accounts.

Authorities say Budha illicitly accessed the eSewa wallets of more than 4,000 users and transferred funds totaling Rs 10.2 million to accounts under the name of Pashupati Global Innovation Pvt. Ltd.

He was arrested from Kalimati, Kathmandu, and has been handed over to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, for further investigation and legal action.
