KATHMANDU: An earthquake struck the Nepal-China border region early this morning, shaking the northern parts of Nepal.

According to the National Seismological Centre in Kathmandu, the tremor occurred at 4:05 AM local time.

The epicenter was located in Dinggyê County, part of the Shigatse region in southern Tibet, approximately 18 kilometers from the Nepalese border.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.0 on the Richter scale.

This region, particularly Dinggyê County, has been experiencing increased seismic activity in recent months.

On Poush 23, a powerful 7.0-magnitude quake struck the same area, followed by another 5.9-magnitude quake on Fagun 24.

These events caused significant damage and casualties, and aftershocks have continued to rattle the region.

The recent quake is part of an ongoing series of aftershocks, further heightening the risk in this already vulnerable area.

Nepal, located in a seismically active zone, remains at high risk for earthquakes.

Just recently, on Baisakh 2, two moderate earthquakes were recorded in the Jajarkot region within a single day.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
