KATHMANDU: Temporary and contract-based employees working in government institutions can now participate in the Social Security Scheme, according to an official notice published in the Nepal Gazette on the first day of the Nepali New Year 2082.

Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Danduraj Ghimire, stated that employees working in institutions fully or partially owned by the Government of Nepal, provincial governments, or local levels—including corporations, boards, authorities, and organizations—are now eligible to enroll in the scheme.

As per the newly implemented provision, employees will be registered as contributors to the Social Security Fund (SSF), and a minimum of 60% of their current salary will be considered as their basic salary for the purpose of contribution.

Under the scheme, employers are required to contribute 20% while employees must contribute 11% of the defined basic salary.

This decision is in accordance with the Social Security Act, 2074 and the Social Security Regulations, 2075.

Although the decision was made on Chaitra 15, it came into effect with its official publication in the Gazette on the New Year’s Day.
