KATHMANDU: Tensions escalated in Birgunj on Saturday afternoon as a clash broke out between two communities during the Hanuman Jayanti procession.

The incident, which occurred around 4:50 PM near the Jamia Masjid in Ward No. 2 of Birgunj, near Shree Ram hall, resulted in more than 40 people, including police officers and civilians, being injured.

The clash began when stones were thrown as the procession neared the mosque, leading to violent confrontations between the two groups.

Authorities quickly moved to contain the situation, but the violence spread, causing further unrest in the area.

To prevent the situation from escalating, the Parsa District Administration Office imposed a curfew starting Saturday evening.

Initially, the curfew was set to last until noon the following day, but due to the worsening situation, it was extended for an additional 12 hours, now lasting until midnight.

The local administration has urged residents to remain calm, avoid rumors, and follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel.

In response to the unrest, additional security forces from the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed to the area.

An investigation into the cause of the clash is underway as authorities work to restore peace and prevent further violence.
