KATHMANDU: Prominent royalist movement leader Durga Prasai, who was recently arrested in India’s Assam state, has claimed that his struggle is not a crime but a fight against smugglers and corruption.

Speaking to the media while in police custody at Bhadrapur Airport on Friday, Prasai stated, “I am not afraid. This is a fight against smuggling. Also, let me be clear — I surrendered myself voluntarily.”

Prasai had been on the run after leading provocative demonstrations in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area. He was apprehended by Indian security forces in coordination with Nepal Police.

Following his arrest, he was handed over to Nepal authorities at the Nepal–India border.

Currently, preparations are underway to extend his judicial remand.

Authorities are also reportedly planning to file an additional case against him under charges of attempted murder.

The royalist leader has remained a controversial figure in recent months due to his vocal stance against the current political establishment and alleged involvement in inciting public unrest.
