KATHMANDU: Controversial figure and fugitive Durga Prasai (now aarrested), who had been on the run following violent pro-monarchy protests in Kathmandu, has been found hiding in Assam, India, despite previously claiming he was still in Nepal.

Prasai had released video messages asserting his presence in Kathmandu.

However, investigations by Nepal Police’s Special Bureau and the Valley Crime Investigation Office revealed that the temple seen in the background of one of his videos is located in the Baksa district of Assam.

According to an officer involved in the investigation, both of Prasai’s recently published video statements were recorded at the same location in Assam, where he had been hiding at the residence of a person of Nepali origin.

The second video, released on Wednesday, featured an edited background, but investigators successfully pinpointed the exact location where it was filmed and collected photographic evidence for further verification.

Acting on the findings of this joint investigation, Indian security forces detained Prasai in coordination with Nepal Police.

He was handed over to Nepali authorities on Friday at the Nepal–India border.

Prasai had been inciting mass protests at Tinkune, Kathmandu, before fleeing.

He now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder.

Police sources confirmed that legal preparations are underway to extend his custody and formally press charges.
