KATHMANDU: Controversial figure and political activist Durga Prasai has been brought to Kathmandu today from Assam, India, via a Buddha Air flight, according to Nepal Police officials.

Prasai, who had been on the run following charges related to inciting protests in the Tinkune area, was apprehended in Assam by Indian security forces in coordination with Nepal Police. He was handed over to Nepalese authorities on Friday at the Kakarbhitta border point.

Early this morning, Prasai was escorted in handcuffs from Kakarbhitta to Bhadrapur Airport under tight security, before being flown to the capital on a scheduled Buddha Air flight.

Alongside Prasai, his personal bodyguard Deepak Khadka was also taken into custody and transported to Kathmandu, police confirmed.

Speaking on the matter, Nepal Police spokesperson DIG Dinesh Kumar Acharya stated that the legal process will now move forward, including preliminary investigations and seeking a judicial extension of custody for further inquiry.

Police sources indicate that preparations are underway to file charges against Prasai under attempted homicide. The charge stems from an incident on Chaitra 15 (March 28), during a pro-monarchy rally at Tinkune, where Prasai allegedly drove his vehicle into a police officer in an attempt to break through a security barricade.

Authorities are currently compiling the necessary documents to extend his remand and pursue legal action accordingly.

Prasai’s arrest marks a significant development in the government’s crackdown on individuals allegedly involved in escalating civil unrest and attempting to destabilize public order. Further updates are expected as police interrogation and court proceedings continue.
