KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, the President of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and the former managing director of Gorkha Media Network, has been remanded to district jail on Monday.

Following the receipt of a court order from the High Court of Tulsipur’s Butwal bench, the police presented him before the district court earlier in the morning.

A team led by DSP Suraj Karki from the District Police Office presented Lamichhane to the court.

Once he was brought to the court, the process for issuing a detention order was completed, and he was immediately sent to jail.

Lamichhane was escorted to the district jail under the leadership of DSP Karki.

According to jail administrator Suresh Bhandari, Lamichhane underwent a health check-up that took about an hour.

Afterward, he was placed in block number 4 of the prison. Bhandari mentioned that Lamichhane is currently the only inmate in that block. “His health condition is normal,” Bhandari stated, adding, “We have placed him in block number 4, and he is the only prisoner there at the moment.”

Sources reveal that the high court ordered Lamichhane to be detained for further investigation, and a separate cell was prepared for him at the district jail.

This cell is located outside the main jail building.

Lamichhane was arrested in Kathmandu on Friday night and brought to Bhairahawa on Saturday morning. After a two-day break, he was kept in the custody of the District Police Office, Rupandehi, over the weekend.

Before taking him to court on Monday morning, security arrangements around Bhairahawa’s district headquarters were tightened.

The police and armed police forces were deployed along the route to the court and within the court premises.

Similarly, a heavy presence of security personnel was also deployed around the district jail.

Lamichhane’s arrest followed a decision by the High Court’s Butwal bench to detain him in connection with a case involving fraud and organized crime related to the Supreme Cooperative in Butwal.
