Dr. Anjan Shakya wins IPU seat, elevates Nepal’s global standing

KATHMANDU: Dr. Anjan Shakya, a Member of the National Assembly, has won a seat representing Nepal in the Sustainable Development Permanent Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for the Asia-Pacific region.

She achieved this victory at a conference held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she was competing against candidates from the Maldives and Iran, both of whom she successfully defeated.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Devraj Ghimire, along with his team, is currently in Uzbekistan.

He expressed confidence that Dr. Shakya’s deep experience in sustainable development would enable her to play a significant role on the international stage representing Nepal.

In support of her candidacy, Speaker Ghimire wrote to the 36 national assembly speakers of the IPU’s Sustainable Development Permanent Committee urging them to vote for Dr. Shakya.

This delegation from Nepal, led by Speaker Ghimire and Dr. Shakya, is attending the 150th Annual Assembly of the IPU and the 4th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network in Tashkent.

Dr. Shakya had presented her candidacy for the Sustainable Development Committee at this conference.

This marks Nepal’s debut presence at this prestigious international platform. Dr. Shakya expressed that her victory not only raised Nepal’s profile on the global stage but also strengthened the country’s reputation in international forums.

Dr. Shakya is currently a member of the National Assembly’s Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee and serves as the Chairperson of its Sustainable Development Subcommittee.

Under her leadership, the report “Study Report 2081 on Nepal’s Transition from a Least Developed to a Developing Nation” has been prepared and submitted to the committee.
