KATHMANDU: A 61-year-old woman, Mithu Tiwari, has been arrested for allegedly desecrating Hindu idols with urine at the revered Adeshwar Temple in Nagarkot Municipality-5, Kathmandu.

Tiwari, a resident of Sukedhara and originally from Dhobichaur, Kathmandu, was apprehended by the police after investigations revealed she had committed similar acts at multiple temples across the city.

According to the police report from the Swayambhu police station, the incident was first reported on Jan 10, when Tiwari was accused of bringing a bottle filled with urine and pouring it on the idol at the Adeshwar Temple.

Further investigation revealed that she had committed similar acts at Chundeshwar Temple, Sita Paila Ganesh Temple, and Harisiddhi Temple as well.

With the help of CCTV footage from nearby areas, the police tracked Tiwari and arrested her on March 5 while she was carrying five bottles of a urine-like substance at the Adeshwar Temple premises.

She has been charged under religious offense laws, and the Kathmandu District Court has granted a five-day extension for further investigation.

In a statement to the police, Tiwari confessed that she had abandoned Hinduism in 2019 and converted to Christianity.

The case continues to be under investigation.
