KATHMANDU: Nepal Police Inspector General (IGP) Deepak Thapa provided a detailed account of the protest, arson, vandalism, and looting carried out by a royalist group in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area on March 28.

The incident was discussed at a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives.

Thapa explained that during the protest, Durga Prasai drove his vehicle aggressively, breaching the security barrier.

He raised concerns about why the vehicle’s tires were not shot at, despite the situation being risky.

Thapa stated, “The windshield was shattered, and a bullet-like vehicle arrived—something we hadn’t anticipated. It was a situation where the intention seemed to be to harm the police.”

He clarified that Prasai was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody, but since the event had received approval from the district administration, he was later released to proceed to the event site.

The protesters had threatened to occupy the Parliament building, Singhadurbar, and the airport, which prompted the police to use force to restore order.

Thapa confirmed that 39 vehicles were damaged during the Tinkune incident. He also mentioned that legal action would be taken against Durga Prasai for his involvement in the protest.

This marks another instance of escalating tensions in Kathmandu, with authorities pledging to take strict action against those involved in unlawful activities.
