BIMSTEC’s sixth summit concludes with vision 2030 declaration

KATHMANDU: The Sixth Summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has successfully concluded in Bangkok, unveiling the Vision 2030 Declaration.
The summit focused on expanding trade, enhancing connectivity, and addressing human security in the region, under the motto of prosperity, resilience, and openness.
The host nation, Thailand, through its Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, provided an overview of the key proposals passed at the summit during a press conference.
Among the proposals were the establishment of a functional mechanism to strengthen BIMSTEC, the creation of an Expert Group to determine the future direction of the organization, a maritime transport agreement, and a joint statement focused on providing assistance to earthquake-affected Myanmar and Thailand.
The summit also emphasized the promotion of tourism and culture, as well as expanding people-to-people connections across the member countries.
In a significant development, Thai Prime Minister Chan-o-cha noted that Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s official visit to Thailand marked a new dimension in bilateral relations between the two nations.
This visit was followed by an official visit to Thailand by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi the next day.
Leaders from all member states, including Prime Minister Oli, addressed the summit, reinforcing the spirit of regional cooperation and solidarity.
The event also underscored the importance of continuing efforts to build stronger economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties within the BIMSTEC framework.
