“Kesari”: A Tale of Courage and Sacrifice
Replay of part 1
The 2019 film Kesari, directed by Anurag Singh, tells the riveting true story of the Battle of Saragarhi, where 21 Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army made a heroic stand against 10,000 Afghan tribesmen in 1897.
The film stars Akshay Kumar as Havildar Ishar Singh, a man known for his combat skills and leadership, and Parineeti Chopra as Jeevani Kaur, his love interest.
The plot follows Ishar Singh, a Sikh soldier, who defies orders to save an Afghan woman from an honor killing, which leads to his reassignment to the remote Saragarhi Fort.
When the fort is besieged by thousands of Afghan tribesmen, these 21 men, under Ishar Singh’s leadership, choose to fight rather than surrender. Their courageous stand against overwhelming odds has since become one of the most remarkable acts of bravery in military history.
The film’s production, shot in India, brings the historical period and the brutal battle to life with high production values.
Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of the steadfast and fearless Ishar Singh was widely praised for his depth and dedication to the character, while the action sequences received acclaim for their intensity and realism.
Kesari was a commercial success, grossing over ₹200 crore globally. It resonated deeply with audiences, not only for its action but also for shedding light on an important, though lesser-known, chapter of Indian history.
The film became a milestone for Indian cinema, praised for both its historical accuracy and emotional weight.
