Dr. Sunil Sharma: Govt. must take responsibility for Tinkune incident

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress lawmaker Dr. Sunil Sharma has stated that the government should take full responsibility for the events that transpired at Tinkune.
Speaking at a meeting of the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee in Singha Durbar on Thursday, he pointed out that the protests were disrupted by the government’s use of tear gas and air firing before the event even began.
He accused the government of preventing the protest from taking place by disrupting it before it could even start. Dr. Sharma emphasized that in a democracy, people should be free to express their views without any obstruction.
The lawmaker further criticized political parties for collaborating to suppress the people and demanded a thorough investigation into the Tinkune incident. He stated that the government, which had fired upon the protesters, must take responsibility for the incident. He also accused the government of violating the right to hold peaceful assemblies by imposing restrictions.
Dr. Sharma explained that the Tinkune incident was the result of the government’s actions, including the use of tear gas, even after the protesters had obtained permission to hold the assembly.
He expressed concerns over the unjustified use of force against people simply trying to express their demands in a democratic manner.
Additionally, he condemned the government for abusing its power by arresting senior leaders of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Vice Chair Rabindra Mishra and General Secretary & MP Dhawal Shumsher JB Rana, and imprisoning them with handcuffs.
He urged for a discussion with the RPP or former King Gyanendra Shah to address the matter. Dr. Sharma demanded the unconditional release of these leaders and other protesters.
