KATHMANDU: Govinda Koirala of Nepal Students’ Union (Nepal Vidyarthi Sangh, NSU) has emerged victorious in the election for the Chair of the Student Union at Trichandra Campus.

The victory is part of a sweeping success for NSU, which won across all positions.

According to Suraj Sejwal, the central spokesperson for NSU, Koirala secured 1,215 votes out of a total of 2,671 cast, defeating his competitors. Sagar Neupane, an independent candidate, received 683 votes, while Pramit Bista from the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union garnered 431 votes.

In this election, a coalition of seven student organizations opposed NSU. These included different factions of communist student groups like the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary), All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary Majority), All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Socialist), among others, and a student wing of the Indigenous Tribal Federation.

Despite this strong opposition, NeviSangh managed to secure a landslide victory.

Dujang Sherpa, the central chairperson of NSU, congratulated Koirala for overcoming the alliance’s challenge.

Koirala is considered a close ally of Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of the Nepali Congress.
