KATHMANDU: Saroj Guragain, the Chief Administrative Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has returned to his office after a failed attempt by the city police to prevent his entry.

Despite the city’s police blocking his access at the gate, the office staff supported him and allowed him to enter the premises.

Guragain had been on leave since Dec 22, and after his absence, Govinda Prasad Sharma, who had been serving as the Acting Chief Administrative Officer, resigned, leaving the city administration without a leader.

Amidst this leadership vacuum, municipal employees have expressed their anger over the delay in receiving their salaries and are rallying to reinstate Guragain to his position.

Earlier, Mayor Balen Shah had accused Guragain of irregularities in the approval of the Kathmandu Tower project’s blueprint and had placed him under an unofficial suspension, prohibiting his office entry.

Despite this, the government refused to remove Guragain, as no formal charges had been proven against him, even though Mayor Shah had sought to replace him with a new Chief Administrative Officer.
