KATHMANDU: Nepal is participating in the Australian Open Karate Championship to be held in Sydney, Australia on April 4-6.

A nine-member Nepali team including five players is leaving here today for Sydney for this purpose.

The Nepali squad comprises four women players and a male player.

Santosh Shrestha will be competing in the Men’s Under 67 Kg weight category while Barsha Budha Magar will compete in the Women’s Under 50 Kg category, Pushpa Lama Under Women’s Under 55 Kg category, Erika Gurung towards Women’s Above 68 Kg weight category and Sabina Shrestha in the Women’s Under 61 Kg category, according to Nepal Karate Association.

Kushal Shrestha and Mandekaji Shrestha are the coaches, Amir Rana is the assistant coach and official and Tara Gurung is the judge.

National Sports Council Member-Secretary Tanka Lal Ghising bid farewell to the team at a programme organized here today.

On the occasion, the team members were also presented with tracksuits sponsored by Bijaya Lama, the 8th South Asian Games gold medalist in karate. The Nepali team will leave for Australia at 11.00pm tonight.
