KATHMANDU: The death toll from the powerful 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has risen to 2,886, with over 4,639 people reported injured.

Myanmar Red Cross Society Chairman, Myo Nyunt, stated that the major challenge in the aftermath has been the lack of logistics coordination for disaster assessment and emergency supply distribution.

Rescue teams have been facing significant difficulties in delivering aid due to safety concerns in the affected areas. Furthermore, the shortage of heavy machinery has made the rescue operations even more challenging, Nyunt added.

The earthquake, which had a profound impact on the western and southern regions of Myanmar, has caused widespread destruction, with dozens of homes and buildings completely collapsed.

The depth and extensive impact of the quake have delayed rescue efforts.

In response, the government has appealed to the international community for assistance in emergency relief efforts.

Progress is being made to deliver food, water, and medical aid to the affected populations in major cities and rural areas.

However, the immediate concern remains the lack of additional resources and equipment needed to continue saving lives.
