KATHMANDU: The capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, has climbed to the third position among the most polluted cities in the world.

On Tuesday at 4:45 PM, Kathmandu’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 150.

According to the global air quality measurement site, Air Quality Index (AQI), Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, ranks first, while Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, ranks second.

Dhaka’s AQI stands at 166, and Hanoi’s AQI is at 154.

In recent days, Kathmandu’s atmosphere has worsened, resulting in polluted air.

Similarly, Kathmandu had topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities on Monday.

During winter, the air in the Kathmandu Valley tends to become polluted due to the lack of adequate rainfall.

An AQI below 50 is considered satisfactory, while an AQI between 150 and 200 is classified as unhealthy.

For a healthy environment, the amount of particles with a diameter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM 2.5) in the air should be less than 5 micrograms per cubic meter.

However, Kathmandu’s level has been recorded at a maximum of 120.57.

These particles contain nitrates, sulfates, black carbon, ammonium, and dust, which are harmful to health.

Precautions and Safety Measures:

  1. Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid outdoor activities, especially during peak pollution hours, typically in the morning and evening.

  2. Wear Masks: Use N95 or similar high-quality masks to reduce inhalation of harmful pollutants like PM 2.5.

  3. Stay Indoors: Stay inside, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or heart conditions.

  4. Air Purifiers: Use air purifiers indoors to improve air quality and reduce pollutants.

  5. Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help flush toxins from your body.

  6. Ventilate Carefully: When air quality improves (e.g., after rainfall), ventilate your home to remove stale air.

  7. Monitor Air Quality: Regularly check AQI levels through apps or websites and adjust your outdoor activities accordingly.

  8. Consult a Doctor: If you experience respiratory symptoms or discomfort, consult a healthcare professional immediately.
