KATHMANDU: Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) has officially resumed operations for 18 hours a day, starting today.

The airport had been closed for 10 hours daily for the past five months, from Nov 8 to March 31, for expansion work aimed at increasing its capacity.

As of today, the airport will operate from 6:00 AM to 12:00 midnight, according to the airport’s general manager, Jagannath Niraula.

He also confirmed that the construction of a link taxiway connecting the taxiways to the runway has been completed.

The work on the parallel taxiway is still ongoing.

The expansion project, which is being carried out under the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), includes the construction of a parallel taxiway to the southwest of the airport, an international apron to the north, and a hanger apron on the eastern side.

The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately Rs 15 billion, with around 90% of the work already completed, as stated by the project manager, Deependra Shrestha.

Although much of the nighttime construction has been completed, the entire project is expected to take another 18 months to finish.

This expansion will significantly enhance the capacity of Nepal’s primary international gateway, ensuring better service and smoother operations in the future.
