LONDON: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged Monday the international community to cooperate to eliminate irregular migration and dismantle migrant smuggling gangs.

This came during a two-day meeting on combating irregular migration, which was hosted by London and attended by representatives from 40 countries.

In his opening remarks at the summit, Starmer said that they can only eliminate human trafficking networks if they work together. He added that those networks exploit the cracks between their institutions and stir up discord between countries.

He argued that resources and intelligence must be shared and that governments need to tackle the problem upstream at every step of the people-smuggling routes.

The summit features representatives from countries of origin of migrants, such as Vietnam and Iraq, as well as transit countries, such as the Balkans.

The summit also includes the head of the Border Force, the body responsible for border control operations in the UK, as well as representatives from INTERPOL, Europol, and Afripol.

The summit comes as the European Union considers establishing migrant centers outside its borders to speed up the expulsion of irregular migrants.

Participants in the meetings will examine the equipment, infrastructure, and forged documents used by human trafficking networks to illegally bring people in.

They will also discuss how the networks operate and reach a global consensus on combating the attraction of migrants online.
