Blood shortage crisis in Nawalparasi East: Urgent call for blood donation
Previously, blood was even transported to hospitals in Chitwan, but now local hospitals are struggling to meet their blood needs.

KATHMANDU: Eastern Nawalparasi is currently facing a severe blood shortage due to a significant increase in demand and a decline in blood donors.
The Nawalpur Blood Transfusion Service, operated by the Nepal Red Cross Society’s Kawasoti branch, has reported a critical shortage of blood reserves, prompting an urgent appeal for blood donations from the community.
According to Baburam Kandel, the Chair of the Nepal Red Cross Kawasoti branch, the monthly demand for blood is around 150 units, but donations have decreased, leading to a critical shortage. “We have set up a 24-hour blood donation service, but the number of donors remains low. We urge everyone to come forward and donate blood,” he stated.
In response to the shortage, the blood transfusion center has been forced to rely on family members of patients to donate blood if additional supplies are needed.
A few years ago, the district consumed between 30 to 40 units of blood per month, but the demand has now risen to 150 units monthly.
Previously, blood was even transported to hospitals in Chitwan, but now local hospitals are struggling to meet their blood needs.
Last year, the Kawasoti blood transfusion center collected 2,000 units of blood, but with the growing demand, they need to collect over 3,000 units of blood this fiscal year to meet requirements.
The situation highlights an urgent need for increased awareness and participation in blood donation drives to address the growing shortage and ensure that hospitals are adequately stocked.
