KATHMANDU: Durga Prasai, the founder of the Joint People’s Movement Committee, has denied fleeing the country, claiming that he has been staying safely in a temple in Kathmandu after learning about a plot to kill him.

In a video statement released today in front of the temple, Prasai spoke out about the events leading up to his decision to seek refuge.

He explained that on the morning of Chait 15, a group of individuals, including members of the youth wing and some police officers in plain clothes, armed with weapons, had entered a private home near the event venue. This was 15 minutes before the program was set to begin.

According to Prasai, these individuals began firing bullets and launching tear gas in the area, preventing him from reaching the stage.

Prasai revealed, “I was targeted by a sniper stationed on the roof, and as I approached the stage, a bullet whizzed by my ear. Another tear gas shell landed in my vehicle. Realizing they intended to kill me, I had no choice but to break through the barricades and move forward.”

He further claimed that during the pro-monarchy protests, authorities blocked large crowds at places like Kalanki, Gaushala, and the Bus Park. The streets were turned into a battlefield, with clashes taking place as the protests were halted and suppressed.

Prasai clarified that his actions were not meant to be a defiance of the security forces but were done in an effort to safeguard himself.

He said, “I broke through the security ring to get inside. I do not hold animosity against the police, and I apologize for any injuries caused during this. I am not running away, and I am not fleeing. I’ve just taken refuge after hearing that the Prime Minister had issued an order to shoot me.”

He also expressed his firm stance, saying, “Durga Prasai is not far away. The media has been misled. I have not escaped, and I will not. The police and administration do not need to search for me. They are trying to silence me by making me a scapegoat. I am only staying safe right now. If it comes to it, I am ready to die right in front of you all.”
