KATHMANDU: Authorities have initiated a crackdown on individuals involved in the royalist demonstration held in the Tinkune area of Kathmandu on Friday.

Several key figures from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), including Rabindra Mishra and Dhawal Shamser Rana, have been detained by the police for their participation in the protest.

Among those arrested is Swagat Nepal, a spokesperson for the newly formed Joint People’s Movement Committee.

According to his wife, Lochana Sharma, Swagat was apprehended by plainclothes officers from his law firm in Bagbazar at around 9:15 PM.

She confirmed that he was taken to Teku, a district of the capital, following his arrest.

Police spokesperson, Apil Raj Bohara, confirmed that by late Friday night, the number of arrests had reached 51.

He stated that further investigations are underway regarding the events of the demonstration.

Bohara condemned the protest as unlawful, describing the actions of those involved as “inhumane, inappropriate, and criminal.” He assured that anyone found engaging in such activities will be investigated and dealt with according to the law.

The arrests come amidst rising tensions surrounding the ongoing royalist campaign, with authorities focusing on maintaining public order and preventing any further disturbances.
