KATHMANDU: On Friday, a pro-monarchy group led by Durga Prasai organized protests across various areas in Kathmandu, demanding the restoration of the monarchy.

While the main focus of the demonstration was in Tinkune, protests also took place in other parts of the capital.

As the protests escalated, the Kathmandu District Administration imposed a curfew until 10:00 PM on Friday.

The protests turned chaotic as demonstrators engaged in violent activities, including vandalism and arson. The police responded with baton charges and even fired warning shots to regain control of the situation.

During the protest in Tinkune, a female Armed Police officer sustained injuries, with reports indicating that her head was severely injured.

Additionally, demonstrators set fire to homes and caused significant damage, resulting in widespread unrest in the area. Law enforcement used tear gas and fired shots to control the escalating violence.

Airport and Other Areas Affected by Protests

In a related incident, a fire broke out near the Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday, with the flames reportedly originating in nearby bushes.

The fire has not been brought under control yet, and there are suspicions that it may have been set by the protesting group. Due to the fire, a Thai Airways flight bound for Bangkok was canceled. Authorities are investigating the incident, and efforts to control the fire are ongoing.

Protesters also targeted the office of the Medicinal Plant Production and Processing Company, a government-run institution, setting it on fire. This act of violence is linked to the pro-monarchy protests that are allegedly supported by former King Gyanendra Shah.

Widespread Vandalism and Arson Across the Capital

The protests also led to destruction and arson at several locations in Kathmandu. In Koteshwor, protesters vandalized and set fire to property at a Bhattbhaten supermarket. Following the destruction in Tinkune, the protesters moved to Koteshwor, where they continued their rampage.

In addition, protesters attacked the office of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist) in Tinkune, causing significant damage.

They broke into the office, threw out furniture and documents, and set them on fire. The same group also targeted a taxi near the CPN-S office, setting it ablaze.

Other Incidents of Arson and Violence

Other areas also witnessed violence, including the setting of a taxi on fire near the CPN-UML office. In another incident, protesters torched a vehicle near the office of the CPN (Maoist Centre) in Parisdanda.

In the Balkumari area, protesters set another vehicle on fire, continuing their trail of destruction after being chased out of Tinkune.

Current Situation

As of now, protesters continue to engage in acts of vandalism and arson across various parts of the Kathmandu Valley, creating an atmosphere of fear and tension. The authorities are struggling to restore order as protests calling for the restoration of the monarchy become increasingly violent.
