KATHMANDU: Protests have kicked off in Kathmandu as both republican and royalist groups begin their demonstrations across the city.
Royalists have already initiated their protests, while republicans are gathering in various locations in preparation for their rallies.
In several key areas of Kathmandu Valley, flags and banners are being waved by leaders and activists, who are set to march in rallies toward their respective gathering spots.
Though it was initially announced that the protests would officially start at noon to avoid disrupting the ongoing SEE exams, participants were already seen joining the rallies as early as 11 AM.
The Socialist Front will hold a large public assembly at Pradshani Marga, while those advocating for the restoration of the monarchy have gathered at Tinkune.
Both locations have set up stages for their respective events.
Activists from various left-wing parties, including the CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), Nepal Socialist Party (NSP), and the Communist Party of Nepal, are mobilizing from different parts of the city to converge at Bhrikuti Mandap.
Protesters from areas such as Babarmahal, Tripureshwar, Kupandol, Sorakhutte, Sundhara, New Road, Thapathali, Putalisadak, Maitidevi, and Kamaladi are expected to join the procession.
To ensure safety and prevent clashes, the organizers have designated separate gathering locations for republican and royalist demonstrators—Bhrikuti Mandap and Tinkune.
The authorities have also implemented a strategic plan to keep the two groups apart.
In response to the growing tensions, the police have ramped up security, deploying over 4,000 officers across Kathmandu Valley.
An additional 3,000 police personnel will be stationed in the Rani Pokhari and Bhadrakali areas, with more than 1,100 officers being dispatched from various divisions to maintain order.
The situation in Kathmandu remains tense as both sides prepare for larger mobilizations throughout the day.
