KATHMANDU: A woman has been tied to an electricity pole and brutally beaten in Dang.

The incident came to light after a video of the beating went viral on social media.

A 26-year-old Shila Chaudhary of Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-10 in Dang was brutally beaten in Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-11.

Locals have said that after it became public that a woman named Shila, who was working as a laborer, was tied to an electricity pole and brutally beaten by locals, some of the incidents were even attempted to be hidden.

A video has emerged showing Shila being tied to an electricity pole and severely beaten by Chagu, the wife of Gopal Chaudhary from Ghorahi-11, along with several other local women.

Shila had been working as a laborer on a vegetable farm in the same ward to earn a living. Women’s rights activist Khuma Khadka stated that Shila was attacked over accusations of stealing items from the farm.

“This incident seems to have been orchestrated in the village,” said Khadka. “The case was brought to the attention of the police on Thursday after the victim’s mother saw the video circulating on social media.”

According to local reports, political party leaders in the area attempted to resolve the beating incident by paying 70,000 rupees.

Before the case reached the Area Police Office in Narayanpur, efforts were made to settle the matter financially in the presence of a local mediator known as ‘Bhadrabhaladami.’

However, after the video of the brutal assault went viral on social media, the victim’s mother spoke out about the abuse her daughter had suffered. She pushed for the money used to settle the incident to be returned, which was done following her intervention.

On Thursday, the victim visited the District Police Office in Ghorahi and formally filed a complaint against the accused, citing unacceptable behavior.

Acting Police Chief DSP Chakra Bahadur Shah explained that initially, the authorities were led to believe the incident was a simple village dispute.

However, after the victim’s formal complaint, the police detained three individuals involved in the assault for questioning.

DSP Shah confirmed that the case had been officially registered and the accused had been arrested based on the victim’s statement. Further investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

Human rights activist Khuma Khadka condemned the situation, stating, “It appears that some local influential figures were paid to cover up this serious incident and reach a settlement.” She added, “No helpless woman should ever be treated this way—tied to a pole in the middle of the night and treated like an animal. The perpetrators must be held accountable.”

The video of the assault, which was shared on social media by the perpetrators themselves, shows Shila being violently beaten.

The victim has reported suffering injuries to her neck, head, and internal parts of her body.
