KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has stated that the current government is making progress in fulfilling the remaining tasks of the peace agreement.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu on Thursday, Deuba emphasized that the government has recently formed a recommendation committee for appointing officials to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission of Inquiry on Disappeared Persons, aimed at transitional justice.

He claimed that these commissions would soon be fully operational.

Deuba expressed confidence that the commissions would conduct truth investigations into human rights violations that occurred during the armed conflict, in accordance with the spirit of the peace agreement, and deliver justice to the victims.

He also assured that the current government and political parties are committed to ensuring justice for the victims.

Deuba highlighted that the two commissions, which are about to be established, must be autonomous, credible, and capable, and that the concerns of conflict victims and human rights communities would be addressed.

The selection committee formed by the government, Deuba said, would recommend competent and qualified individuals in a transparent manner, keeping the rights of the victims at the center.

He further noted that if Nepal successfully resolves the issue of transitional justice on its own, it could serve as a model for other countries.

Deuba added that after providing transitional justice, Nepal could establish a long-term peace model for the world.
