Siraha officials in custody over caste-based atrocities, remand extension sought

KATHMANDU: The Rural Municipality Chairperson and former Ward Chairperson, who are currently in police custody in connection with the incident of atrocities against a Dalit family during the Mahayagya in Aurahi, Siraha, will be presented in court today to seek an extension of their remand.
Shivaji Yadav, the Rural Municipality Chairperson, and Dilip Yadav, the former Ward Chairperson, are set to appear before the Siraha District Court, where their remand will be extended, according to DSP Birendra Kumar Paswan, the spokesperson for the District Police Office in Siraha.
They were arrested on the evening of the Falgun 8.
Earlier, the court granted the police five days to detain them for further investigation.
The incident took place on Falgun 10 in Aurahi Rural Municipality-5, when the house of Deepak Mallik, a member of the Dalit community, was destroyed by Shivaji Yadav, Dilip Yadav, and Bajrangi Baba using a bulldozer at the Mahayagya site.
Following the incident, Deepak Mallik filed a complaint with the District Police Office in Siraha on Saturday, accusing the three individuals of crimes related to caste discrimination and untouchability.
He has called for the prosecution of the accused and for compensation due to the caste-based violence and property damage.
According to the law, those found guilty of caste-based untouchability offenses can face imprisonment from 3 months to 3 years and fines ranging from 50,000 to 200,000 rupees.
Bajrangi Baba remains at large in this case.
