KATHMANDU: Opposition parties in Nepal staged a protest in Parliament on Wednesday, following the dismissal of Kulman Ghising, the Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

As soon as the session of the House of Representatives commenced, lawmakers from opposition parties stood up and voiced their opposition.

Speaker Devraj Ghimire granted time to Shakti Bahadur Basnet, a lawmaker from the CPN (Maoist Centre), to speak on behalf of the opposition.

In his address, Basnet accused the government of using its two-thirds majority to arrogantly remove Ghising from his position. He emphasized that Parliament could not function until the government responded to the reasons behind Ghising’s dismissal.

Basnet further accused the government of attempting to consolidate power by taking control of key state institutions and bodies. He stated, “The government is trying to exercise authoritarianism by taking control of vital state organs and institutions. In a democracy, numbers are important, but the government is using its two-thirds strength to humiliate a national service hero. The government is trying to cover up its wrongdoings by staging a farce of explanations for Ghising’s removal.”

He also claimed that the government’s main objective was to prevent any discussion regarding the outstanding arrears related to Ghising’s dismissal, while fulfilling the interests of mafias and handing over the authority to middlemen.

Due to the continuous disruption by the opposition, the Parliament session was adjourned for half an hour.

The controversy surrounding Ghising’s removal has sparked widespread debate and criticism, with the opposition calling it an attempt to undermine public service for political gain.
