KATHMANDU: The opposition parties disrupted today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, demanding a response from the Prime Minister.

As soon as the session commenced, Speaker Devraj Ghimire was confronted with protests from opposition MPs.

Speaker Ghimire had given floor time to Shaktibahadur Basnet, a lawmaker from the CPN (Maoist Centre), who criticized the government for its ignorance of changing circumstances and for allegedly acting in the interest of vested groups and middlemen.

Basnet specifically pointed out the removal of Kulman Ghising, the Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority, as an example of the government’s mismanagement. He called for the reversal of the decision to remove Ghising and insisted that the Prime Minister address this issue.

As Basnet finished his statement, opposition lawmakers once again stood up in protest. In response to the disruption, Speaker Ghimire suspended the session for 30 minutes.

According to the scheduled agenda, the session was to discuss the “Banking Offense and Penalties (Second Amendment) Bill, 2080,” which has already been reviewed by the National Assembly. Additionally, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya was set to present a proposal for the “Nepal Law Professional Council (Second Amendment) Bill, 2081” as well as a proposal for the “Constitutional Council (Functions, Duties, Powers, and Procedures) (First Amendment) Bill, 2081” for approval.

The disruption in Parliament has raised significant concerns about the functioning of the legislative process amid ongoing political tensions.
