Nepal becomes a hub for eye treatment for foreign nationals

KATHMANDU: Citizens from countries such as India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan are increasingly traveling to Nepal for eye treatment.
The Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) operates 28 eye hospitals and 224 eye treatment centers, which have become key destinations for foreign patients seeking eye care.
In 2024, through its network, the NNJS conducted eye tests for 907,071 foreign nationals and performed cataract surgeries on 162,845 individuals, according to Dr. Shailesh Kumar Mishra, the Executive Director of the Sangh.
Overall, the NNJS network tested the eyes of 3.27 million patients and carried out 258,575 surgeries.
Additionally, 34,425 eye surgeries were performed free of charge through various external programs and the support of national and international development partners, as well as internal resources.
To date, the NNJS has provided treatment to a total of 468,868,060 individuals, including both Nepali and foreign nationals, and performed eye surgeries on 53,922,224 people, as per the information shared by Dr. Mishra.
