Foreign Employment increases by 17%, UAE top destination for Nepali workers

KATHMANDU: The number of people going for foreign employment has increased by 17%.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, the number of labor approvals for foreign employment in the current fiscal year 2081/82 has increased by 15.07% compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year 2080/81.

In the previous year, during the same period, 462,469 people had received labor approval, while in the current fiscal year, 544,470 people have received approval to go abroad, which is an increase of 82,071 people compared to the previous year.

The department also mentioned that the highest number of labor approvals for foreign employment in the current fiscal year was issued in Mangsir and Magh months.

In the current fiscal year, the highest number of labor approvals was issued in Mangsir, with 84,227 people receiving approval, and the lowest number in Ashoj, with 53,425 people.

In Magh, 72,441 people received approval, and in Falgun, 68,963 people received approval to go abroad for foreign employment.

During the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2081/82, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been the top destination for Nepali workers.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, out of 544,570 people who received labor approval for foreign employment, 173,341 people received approval for the UAE alone.

The second most popular destination country for Nepali workers in the current fiscal year is Saudi Arabia, followed by Qatar.

During this period, 103,991 people received labor approval for Saudi Arabia, while 93,405 people received approval for Qatar.

Malaysia, which was the second destination in the fiscal year 2080/81 and the top destination in 2079/80, has now dropped to the fifth position.

In the current fiscal year, 18,894 people received labor approval for Malaysia.

Kuwait ranks fourth, with 23,500 people receiving labor approval. In addition, 7,710 people went to South Korea through the Employment Permit System (EPS).

According to the Director and Information Officer of the Department, Gurudatt Suvedi, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been the top destinations for Nepali workers since the previous fiscal year.

Due to the recovery of industries and businesses in these countries after the pandemic, the demand for Nepali workers has increased, making them the top two foreign employment destinations.
